Choosing the right Engine Oil for your car

Fundamentally choosing the right engine oil for your car has an effect on how well your car runs. Having the right engine oil keep your engine parts lubricated, protects them from wear and tear, cool them down and cleans away contaminants.

Choosing the right engine oil does not have to be intimidating. You can start by asking a few basic questions.

What kind of engine oil does the vehicle manufacturer recommends?

Always refer to the owner’s manual. The vehicle manufacturer will know what oil goes well with the vehicle.

Does the engine oil have API starburst and donut symbols on the packaging?

When choosing to buy engine oil, always look out for the starburst and donut symbol on the packaging. These symbols indicates the oil has been tested to meet the stringent standards of American Petroleum Institue (API).

However, do be aware of fake API symbols.  To be absolutely sure, always refer to the API website (www.API.org) for the list of brand names under the Engine Oil and Certification System (EOLCS) licensee program.

Does the engine oil have OEM approvals?

Having OEM’s approval is a recognition by each manufacturer on the quality and performance of the engine oil to meet the strict requirements of its engine.

What is the SAE viscosity rating of the engine oil?

Depending on the climate the car is driven and the characteristic of the engine, choosing engine oil with the right viscosity rating is crucial.

If you are driving in conditions with sharp weather changes, the winter rating is essential as it affects the performance of the engine at cold start. Different types of engine also have different needs, some works better with a “thinner” oil, while some with “thicker” oil.

To be absolutely sure, always refer to the owner’s manual.
